Part of any waste management plan involves recycling. Whether you are an individual or a business, everyone is trying to reduce waste in order to reduce costs at home and at work.
Here are some simple tips to help you reduce your waste, whether it is at home or at work. Whether you are the boss, or the lowly grunt on the sales floor. Everyone can practice the four R’s and make for a healthier world for all of us.
Reduce is the first principle of waste management. Sure, you need your bathroom tissue. No question about that. But how you purchase your products is as much as what you purchase. Rather than buying individually wrapped tissue in a big plastic bag, consider buying yours in a large cardboard box without the wrapping. Before you buy, evaluate not only the product, but the way it is packaged. This can help you reduce the amount of waste that you generate.
The second R is Reuse. How many times did you reuse the sandwich bag that you just threw out today? Did you clean it before you put your sandwich in it? Did you use it for snack mix or cookies or dried fruit? How many times did you reuse the plastic shopping bag before throwing it in the garbage?
R number three is Renew. Sometimes your household effects break down. Rather than jumping onto the “buy something right now to replace it” bandwagon, it is important to develop the ability to repair your household items. Do not just throw your vacuum cleaner away – see if you can repair it and continue to use it for another year or so.
R number four is Recycle. When you recycle products that have exhausted their use, you help to return these products to a facility that can break these products down into materials that can be used over and over again. Remember to sort your garbage. Put your clear glass into a separate container from your colored glass, put your plastic packaging into another container, and your paper products into another. Depending on where you live, you may even be able to participate in a community compost program, or you can always just compost in your own back yard (or do vermicomposting).
Part of the whole process of reducing waste is simply preventing things from going in the garbage. Many things that end up at the curb are often still working just fine but have become somewhat undesirable to the owner. Rather than putting them to the curb, go online and post your unwanted item to any number of classified advertisements and you can be certain that someone will be interested in taking them off your hands and putting some cash in them at the same time. Alternately, donate your unwanted goods to a local charity that has a fund-raising boutique or try Markham recycle.
The hardest part of waste management is simply not purchasing what you do not need. When you commit to reducing your waste, you will discover just how much you used to throw out without a thought. And then you will see how much you can save while saving the environment.
