It seems to be a little known fact that growing tomatoes from seeds is possible. Most varieties are available in seed form for gardeners of all types. The seeds are very easy to grow and produce fruits that are just as good and bountiful as those that come from transplants.
The first thing you need to do in order to start growing your own tomatoes from seeds is to figure out where you are going to place them. Areas like window sills or outside balconies are best in the beginning. Some type of planting tray is needed to put the seeds in and you need to evenly space them throughout the tray. You will need warm conditions for the best results so the window sill is ideal. If you are worried about the soil drying out to quickly from all the sunlight you can cover the tray with plastic wrap at this time.
In only about eight weeks your seeds will have grown an average of at least a few inches. At this point you will need to transplant them into bigger containers and separate them if you need to. Be extremely careful when transplanting at this age though because the seedlings will be very delicate and can break easily.
The new containers need to be filled with fresh soil and a small hole dug into the center. Place the tomato plant in the hole and fill in the area around it with more soil. You can then press down lightly on the soil to pack it in around the roots. Then you will need to put them back into the sunlight and make sure they stay properly watered.
Once your seedling has reach around 6 inches or so you can transplant it again to an even bigger container. It is at this time you can place the plant outdoors if you would like. The outside exposure to the sunlight at this stage will harden the seeds of the plant.
As long as you plants has start to grow some leaves and you are providing enough sunshine and water it will continue to grow a few more inches at a rapid pace. It is at this time you will transplant the plants one last time to their final containers. During this final transplant you will want to bury the plant deep enough that only about 4 of it’s leaves are above the soil line. Doing this aids the plant in strengthening it’s roots and will help it to produce a better yield of fruit.
Strong plants are better capable of holding up the heavy fruits they produce. Weaker plants can easily break from the weight and ruin any chance of a harvest that you had. Be sure to give your plants the warmth, sunshine and water that they need to thrive. Be especially cautious during transplant so you won’t damage the plant in any way.
Being able to grow and produce your own tomatoes in the convenience of your own home makes it much easier for you and your family to eat healthy and avoid all the chemicals that are used on commercially processed varieties. Not having to buy tomatoes every time you visit the grocery store can also save your family a lot of money.
