Consider A Few Things Before Looking For A Deck Installer

Do you feel that your home is missing a Long Island deck in order to make it complete? If so, then congratulations! The decision you make now will improve your backyard and add to your enjoyment of it for years to come.

You have decided to get a deck installer to help you. What should you do next? Before you rush out and get a contractor in take a moment to read the following few things you need to know.

1. What sort of work do you want done?

Regardless of size, you need to know exactly what it is the deck will be for. Is it going to be little more than a back porch for you to kick back on? Maybe you’re looking for a place to set up a grill pit with room for tables and chairs for dining?

2. Is there a design you have in mind?

Long Island decks come in all shapes, sizes, and – in some cases – colors. Some people prefer plain, practical designs for their decks. Durability is their primary concern, as is the possibility for storage underneath. Other designs allow for more elaborate materials to be used, including detailed work on the railings and sides. Most decks will fall somewhere in-between, but both extremes have a lot to offer the homeowner. It really is up to the homeowner to decide what it is he wants.

3. Look at your budget

Face it. In order to have the best, you have to spend the most. You may want the greatest deck in the world, but it might not be feasible. After the design has been chosen you should then try and figure out if it’s going to be economically viable. You may even want to have a couple of designs in your head so that if one proves to be unfeasible you can switch to the other.

4. Know where and where not to cut costs

If you are faced with a choice of cutting either material or labor costs, you should be careful. Just because one contractor charges a lower hourly rate than another, don’t assume this will lead to cost savings. It may look good on paper, but hiring inferior labor can lead to inferior craftsmanship, which will ultimately lead to increased maintenance costs in the future.

5. Make sure you get a quote before you hire someone

Make sure you get a quote down on paper before proceeding any further with a contractor. You don’t want to hear one price for your LI deck project only to find out at the end that it’s much more than originally quoted.
